My Background in Law and Philosophy

I have a law degree, and I completed all the coursework for a PhD in philosophy.

In 2003, I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School with high honors. I had been an associate editor and a senior editor of the Law Review, the oldest student-edited legal journal in the United States. In addition to the normal responsibilities of copy editing articles and checking citations, I advised the editor in chief on online publishing and my fellow editors on grammar issues. Law schools do not have formal majors, but in my coursework, I focused on constitutional and criminal law. I remain interested in these issues and have written on them for a Washington nonprofit and a daily newspaper.

After completing the JD, I went to the City University of New York Graduate Center to pursue a PhD; in 2006, I took my master’s and transferred to the University of Virginia. My studies in both New York and Charlottesville focused on ethics and political philosophy, with particular attention to the work of Plato and Aristotle; while at U.Va., I audited two years of ancient Greek.

When I left Charlottesville, I had satisfied the coursework, logic, and qualifying-paper requirements to earn a PhD there. But I eventually decided that a doctorate was not necessary for the professional work I wanted to do.
